Researhers Discover Million-Year-Old Camel Bone

Scientists in Syria have discovered a jaw bone of a camel that dates back one million years. The jaw bone is tiny and belongs to a possibly previously-unknown species of camel. Last year, bones of a giant camel were found.

That mammoth camel combined with the current find of the smaller, much older camel could provide clues into camel evolution. The find was made last month by a team made up of Syrian and Swiss scientists.

Swiss archaeologist Jean-Marie Le Tensorer said: "It is a very important discovery. The camel is very small in comparison with the normal camel. But we have to find more bones, different remains, before we can be sure it is a new species."
